Sandra Bouguerch  …Handle With Care

Friday 17 January - Friday 21 February

Preview Friday 17 January

The Studios Gallery is delighted to announce an exhibition of works from interdisciplinary artist Sandra Bouguerch. …Handle With Care opens with a preview on Friday January 17th, 6.30pm – 8.30pm during which Bouguerch will be staging an emotive performance.

…Handle With Care brings together new and previous works in an intimate look into the world the artist shares with her elderly father Terrence. For Bouguerch, the body has always been both her subject and medium, the scope of which has been expanded in this latest work to include her father. Utilising various media, including performance, video and photography to record outcomes, intense visual and audio atmospheres are created that draw the viewer ever deeper into the emotional dilemmas of caring for an elderly relative struggling with symptoms of dementia.

Portraying the experience from the point of view of artist and care-giver, these newer works continue Bouguerch’s ‘exploration of self’ by creating feelings of tension and awareness, exposure and vulnerability - pushing the boundaries of self-discovery this makes for some uncomfortable viewing.

Terrence is a willing participant in the artist’s investigations and has even gone as far as signing an agreement for future use when he is unable to make an informed decision to be involved. The viewer should be mindful of this when put in the difficult position of witnessing this challenging work.

Bouguerch has exhibited widely in group exhibitions across the UK. This will be her first solo show. She is based at the artist-led neo:studios in Bolton.

The exhibition runs until Friday 21st February, opening times Thursday 11am-7pm Friday 11am – 4pm or by appointment Tel: 07753842861 The Studios Gallery, 12 Union Road, New Mills, SK22 3ES
