Drawing the human form maybe challenging and is often perceived as a difficult subject and has been regarded as the very foundation of an artist’s education however it is also about the exploration of skills, techniques and materials and exploring the fundamental principles of making marks on paper.
Course content:
These sessions will tackle the difficulties of translating a 3D subject into a 2D drawing, constantly questioning your perception of drawing, through traditional and contemporary methods. Whether you are a beginner or experienced these sessions will aim to provide you with the confidence and skills to embrace the activity of figure drawing.
Various subjects covered will include:
Drawing – the starting point
This session is about using several techniques, both traditional and unconventional, to help you understand how the human form can be rendered, it is also the foundation for the rest of the sessions; techniques used to aid measurement and proportion will be continually revisited throughout the course. We will be looking at the importance of line, shape, positive and negative space and the overall exploration of making marks and concentrating on portraits as part of the process.
Light & Dark
After line, the next most important element is light and dark. With the use of artificial light sources you will be capturing the figure in several poses, concentrating on the dramatic effect of contrasting areas of light and dark, using b/w materials and colour.
Ink and Wash
A favourite for most but if you haven’t tried it the methods used will give you a basic understanding of how to use ‘ink & wash’. You will be exploring the characteristics of the materials supplied and using these skills to create various studies, from simple, quick, fluid silhouettes to more accomplished images using various washes and line.
Mono-printing
Line and shapes are explored with this creative process. Several methods are carried out to produce one-off prints, using hand drawn images to generate spontaneous marks and studies.
Collage & patterns
Using projected patterns and type onto the model and environment to add a further dimension to your drawings. Shape and colour is explored with paper and additional materials to produce images that can be abstract or representational.
Painting with acrylics
Flesh tones will once again be explored with emphasis on a more painterly approach.
Movement
Capturing the figure whilst moving and in dynamic poses to achieve a sense of movement.

Tracy Robertson, (Fennell) has several years experience as an illustrator, working within the publishing, advertising and editorial fields, using a wide range of media, primarily inks and watercolours, with the addition of digital applications. She began working for children’s publications and was nominated for the ‘Mother Goose Award’ for her BBC picture book ‘Owl’ and has continued to work in publishing and more recently fashion illustration.
Tracy also lectured at Stockport College for almost 20 years within the Visual & Performing Arts Department, teaching life drawing, image-making and print. Her career has spanned over several levels, introducing visual skills to a variety of creative courses; this includes the delivery of both traditional and digital media within Graphics and Illustration. |
